Radio 1 Interviews Saks Apprentices

Reading Time: 3 minutes

When BBC Radio 1 needed expert opinions regarding the value of hairdressing apprenticeships, asking ‘What will the future of working in the hair salon industry look like’? they knew exactly who to contact… Saks Hair & Beauty and Kleek Apprenticeships.

Big high fives to our Saks faces for contributing and team-Kleek for hosting the Newsbeaters.

OVER TO OUR INSPIRING APPRENTICES FOR THEIR THOUGHTS

Enter Alex, Level 3 hairdressing apprentice at Saks Hair Northallerton. Who shared her dream with Newsbeat of owning her own salon one day and how this won’t be possible without the help of apprentices.

Saying “You can’t run a salon without having apprentices. They’re a salon’s main support when stylists are busy with clients”.

Next up, Adam, Level 2 hairdressing apprentice at Saks Hair Wetherby, who talked about the value apprentices bring to the salon. We caught up with him to find out how the BBC interview went.

How did your interview go Adam?

“It was an amazing experience! It was a great opportunity to share my journey as an apprentice, the ups and downs, and to talk about the industry I’m so passionate about.”

Not only did you represent yourself, but Saks, Kleek and the whole apprenticeship program… no pressure! “It was nerve-wracking at first because I’ve never been interviewed before, but ultimately, I loved being able to highlight the skills of apprentices and showcase the opportunities that come with this career, because I know how valuable this path is for aspiring future stylists.

How do you feel now you’ve taken the leap into radio interviews? It made me feel really proud of how far I’ve come.”

The man himself

PROUD MOMENT INDEED

Salon owner, Claire Fraser, at Saks Hair Wetherby, says “Adam joined my team 16 months ago as a shy, timid 16-year-old. Over time he has developed so much confidence and blossomed into a fantastic young man who I am very proud of”.

Claire, who’s been with Saks for 29 years, continues “He always thinks of others, even memorising everyone’s drinks! Adam involves himself with our customers on every visit… he is an absolute joy to work with.”

Shannon, an ex-apprentice and now salon manager at Saks Hair Hexham, shared her perspective, explaining, “There are people cutting corners in our industry, which devalues what we do.” After the interview, she emphasized, “Our apprentices at Saks Hexham are the backbone of our business; we couldn’t run the salon without them! We need to encourage more young people to become apprentices to secure the future of our industry and equip them with skills for life.”
