Reading Time: 5 minutes

If you’re a regular customer of of our hair and beauty salon at Sedbury Hall, Richmond, you’ll know how much our salon’s hairdressers and beauty therapists love to raise funds for Saks’ charity of choice, The Eve Appeal.

We’ve held various Saks4Eve in-salon events and attended all sorts of activities out and about, all in the name of donating. Which got us thinking, what’s next? What can we do that’s different?

In comes our graduate stylist, Izzy, who decided she’d do something special….

BUZZ CUT BRAVERY

When we found out Izzy was braving a buzz cut, we were in awe! What a way to help us get towards reaching our national target of raising £250,000 to aid gynae cancers research and awareness.

Speaking on social media, Izzy says “At Saks, we look after our customers and honour women, which is why The Eve Appeal is close to our hearts, as it’s the UK’s leading charity in funding research and raising awareness into the five gynaecological cancers – womb, ovarian, cervical, vulval and vaginal”.

“Over the years so far, Saks has raised an amazing £232,000 for The Eve Appeal, as well as sharing awareness messages to our customers far and wide. So I’m super proud to have my hair shaved off in the hope of raising some more money, and with your help we can make sure that their research continues to grow”.

IZZY’S NEW LOOK

Here to tell us all about it, Izzy takes five for a quick Q&A:

Well done Izzy – amazing job! What made you decide to shave your head for our charity of choice?

“I’ve always admired people who shave their hair, whatever the reason… so I wanted to do just that and look back feeling content with my accomplishment in life, by raising money and shaving my hair too”.

How did you feel on the day, were you a bag of nerves or full of excitement?

“The day itself seemed a long time coming, so I was well prepared when it came to it. I felt confident and more than ready for the buzz cut. I kept planning my future funky hairstyles whilst I was waiting to do it”.

“There was a sudden wave of nerves beforehand, because I knew it was finally time, but our salon owner, Anna, came to the rescue with some encouragement, and I knew I had nothing to worry about, bringing back the buzz about the buzz! On reflection I can say I am very proud of the outcome and feel overwhelmed by the support”.

But the question is – who actually shaved your head? Do you do it or one of your trusted sister-stylists?

“Previously I donated the main length of my hair to Little Lady Locks, so I already had a micro-bob to work with, and Laura, our hair salon director, did the bulk of the shave (with a few extra helpers!). My friend Faith did the first buzz of the pig tails. My mum was offered a go too, but wasn’t too keen, opting to be a happy observer instead”.

You rock this! Are you loving your new look? That smile says it all!

“I love the buzz cut! I feel liberated, proud and grateful for the outcome of it all. I’m enjoying just being my natural brunette-self, but the funky colours are soon to come, so watch this space. I’m so glad I did it and have no regrets”.

You raised £2,500 – such an accomplishment. We salute you. Did you expect to raise that much?

“When we set up my fundraising page, I didn’t want to set a target as I would have been happy with whatever amount we made. But being able to make £2,500 is an insane achievement and I am immensely thankful to those who showed their support in whatever way they could”.

“I have never raised money of my own accord before, so didn’t really have any idea just how much would be possible, but I can happily say that I’m chuffed with the amount”.

OVER TO SALON OWNER, ANNA

Salon owner, Anna, says: “I’m super proud of Izzy and how much she has raised. What an amazing selfless thing to do, especially as a 20-year-old woman. We know how important our hair is to us and making such a huge change to how you look is such a brave thing to do, I have nothing but admiration for Izzy”.

“The whole team got behind the fundraising and supported Izzy from when she decided to do it, in September last year. When the head shave day finally arrived everyone was super excited in the salon but also a little nervous for what she was going to do!”

“The whole team wore their Eve Appeal t-shirts to raise awareness of gynaecological cancer, and the evening was really relaxed, when we were joined by Izzy’s friends and family for a glass of fizz to celebrate her bravery”.

“Of course, Izzy looks amazing with her freshly shaved head. Thanks to everyone that donated and supported Izzy. The whole Saks Hair & Beauty team are very grateful”.
