Celebrating 25 Years of Our Andrew
We’re shouting a huge congratulations to Andrew, salon director at Saks Hair in Barnard Castle, as he celebrates an incredible 25 years with Saks. From having a Saturday job and winning awards, to creator of the “Andrew blow-dry” – it has been a journey full of styling, dedication, fab times and lots of laughs.

FROM THE MAIN MAN HIMSELF
We caught up with Andrew to find out all about his fabulous hairdressing career so far…
So, Andrew. First of all – massive congratulations on celebrating 25 years with Saks, what an achievement! Where did it all begin?
“Towards the end of school, I did a careers test and one of the suggestions was hairdressing, so I thought I’d give it a go. I did a year working Saturdays and late nights, while still at school. When I finished school, I joined full time. Honestly, I was scared! I was quite shy and thought hairdressing might help build my confidence.”
What’s been a standout moment in your career?
“Winning a Special Recognition Award was a huge moment. And even in my very first year at Saks Hair (then in Darlington), I was a finalist in the Apprentice Awards.”
You’ve been with Saks for an amazing 25 years, what’s kept you so dedicated?
“When I left Saks Hair in Darlington to try working elsewhere, I realised the difference in standards, so I came back to Saks, and never looked back! That, and my amazing customers, of course”
Any moments you’ll never forget?
“Definitely the time a car came through the salon window! I saw it in the mirror whilst styling a customer’s hair, but no one was driving it. I just calmly got everyone to the back of the salon, then went to check it out. Surreal moment.”
We weren’t expecting you to say that!
“Well, that’s not all. I’ve also done some fun work for charity, abseiled off the RVI (Royal Victoria Infirmary), taken part in charity walks and I’ve styled a few high-profile sports personalities over the years.”
Has the industry changed a lot since you started?
“Oh, massively! The level of skill, the professionalism, and especially customer care, have improved lots. It’s better than ever, which is why I’m still here, loving what I do.”
Which trends have you seen come and go?
“Well… ‘Rachel’ from Friends springs to mind… Perming was huge at one point. But these days, more people are embracing colour.”
What styles do you love creating?
“I love a bouncy blow-dry, the team even call it the ‘Andrew blow-dry’!”
Finally, how do you unwind after a day in the salon?
“Football, beers, and time outdoors. If I wasn’t a hair stylist, I’d probably be working on a farm or gardening. I was brought up around that lifestyle.”
