Word from Kirsty on salon success

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Our Kirsty Jewson knows a thing or two about the beauty industry and salon-success. A member of our Saks Beauty Squad and owner of award-winning Saks Beauty Northallerton, Kirsty was Head of Beauty at Saks UK for 12 years, responsible for developing our head-to-toe Saks Beauty concept.

ASK YOURSELF IF YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO

Check that you’ve got a real passion for beauty – you’ll live it 24/7. Owning a salon comes with massive perks but hopefully you’ll be super-busy and can’t get in for me-time!

Being part of Saks gives everything you need for salon-success. Our franchising model is a savvy option as you get a tried and tested model, plus all the support you’ll need. Saks’ procedures are cornerstones on which you build your biz… but you’re the boss. Best of both worlds, right?

1     FRANCHISING AND SPECIAL COMMUNITY

Being a good salon owner requires guts. You’ll have to calculated risks, learn from mistakes and – like any business – keep going. It’s so worth it.

Support from the Saks Fam is immense. Being Saks means you’ve got a network of people with you – plus there’s always help from Saks HQ too. Brainstorming and ways to improve. Helping hands… and legendary get-togethers!

2     MIX UP YOUR MARKETING

Remember traditional marketing! Social media is an amazing way to reach your customers and being part of Saks means we’re provided with lots of lovely content from national campaigns that run all year round – take #ILOVESAKS for instance – our customers love it! Don’t rely on social media solely though!

Don’t hide behind your salon doors! Get out and forge relationships with local business owners and shout about what you do. You can’t beat meeting people to showcase your knowledge and passion – it’s infectious.

3     TEAM IS EVERYTHING

A big challenge we all face in the industry today is staffing. Recruit team members who have that spark, nurture and empower them so they stay!

My recipe for success? Be the salon that invests in the development of staff.

Work-life balance is super-important so offer great employment packages. Time-out and flexi hours are as important as rates of pay and commission.

Be the best in your area! Enter awards and shout about it from the rooftops when you ‘get through’ and win! These messages all inspire people to want to work for you.

Easier said than done but when team members leave try not to take it personally. Keep a bank of potential applicants to contact in such circumstances.

4     INVESTMENT? DECISIONS, DECISIONS

I love the UK beauty industry because it’s fast-paced with new innovations and advancements coming through all the time. This can be challenging as it means there can be a pressure to invest into your business.

Facebook-Best-Face-On

Identifying when something is a fad or if it’s a wise investment can be challenging. Being part of a group helps massively here. Knowing that potential brands and products have been vigorously researched gives peace of mind when choosing which new treatments to integrate into your own beauty menu.

5     SUPPORT A WORTHWHILE CAUSE

We’ve united even more through our cause, raising funds for The Eve Appeal to fund essential research into the five women-only cancers of the cervix, ovaries, vagina, vulva and womb. Raising £100,000+ is making everyone in the Saks Fam – and our customers – incredibly proud.
