Saks Announces New Plans to Help Unemployed
Leading hair and beauty franchise group, Saks, has launched a fast-track barbering course and a barbershop chain, providing an opportunity for hundreds of unemployed workers to change their careers and lives.
Saks, which already has over 140 hair and beauty salons and several training Academies nationwide, believes much of its future growth lies in men’s hairdressing and is now planning to open 100 men’s hairdressing shops over the next five years, as well as Barbers Academies within the next few months.
The 10-week intensive course, priced at £4000*, will be run at the group’s existing Academies in London, Darlington and Glasgow where fast-track courses in women’s hairdressing and beauty therapy are already a huge success. Saks, officially acknowledged as the UK’s best training provider, plans to launch more Academies shortly specifically catering for the barbering course.
Once qualified, the graduates will have excellent job prospects – 90% of students completing the existing Saks Beginners courses in hairdressing and beauty therapy go straight into a job.
Every day the media reports more job cuts in various industries and Saks aims to offer barbering as an exciting and alternative career with real career prospects.
Stephen Kee says: “There are thousands of unemployed workers out there who are looking for a change of career, and we have had calls from all sorts of people, including those involved in heavy engineering, who have realised this is one of a few remaining industries where employers are crying out for staff. Our courses will be held as we plan the launch of our barber chain, so there will be jobs open to students.”
It’s unlikely that cutting hair for a living is something most of the recently unemployed, particularly men, have considered. But Saks hopes to change all that. Kee continues: “How many other jobs are there where you can be paid to talk about where Beckham’s likely to be playing next season or Button’s recent success in Formula 1?”
