John Goddard

John Goddard has been hairdressing at Saks since 1995. In 2005 he went into partnership with his then boss at Saks Ripon, Lee Kettlewell, and opened a Saks salon in Skipton.

“Throughout my hairdressing career I have always worked for Saks,” says John. “I started hairdressing when I was 17 and worked at Saks Ripon where I had a busy column. While I was there I was spotted by the Saks Art Team and invited to join them, which was a real honour, and allowed me to develop my creative and training skills.”

“Since joining Saks I have always aspired to open my own salon. Generally hairdressers choose which route they want to take, be it creative or managerial. I didn't see why I couldn't do both. I knew that owning a salon would be a wise career move and would offer excellent prospects.”

“Saks is a great business. The fact that it's the leading hair and beauty company in the UK was a big reason for me choosing to open a Saks franchise. From working at Saks Ripon I knew how slickly-run the network is, and was aware of the excellent support the group offers with its now 35 years experience.”

“On top of the salon doing well as a business, we've enjoyed huge success creatively. We reached the Grand Final of the L'Oréal Colour Trophy in 2008 and scooped the prize for the top entry from the North East. I was also asked to represent Saks for L'Oréal Professionnel, one of the biggest haircare companies in the world, as a H3 (H-cubed) ambassador for the North East - teaching the company's trends collection to hairdressers from across the region.”

“Being a Saks franchisee allows me to exploit Saks as a business opportunity whilst giving me the hairdressing inspiration I crave for”.

No two days are the same for John, and the challenges of running a business, coupled with the opportunities to explore his creative side, keep him on his toes!

“I have found it really useful being in a partnership,” says John. “As long as both partners know where they stand and everything is agreed in writing it works well. It's also been very helpful because there are two of us making the decisions. It's being a great way for me to get started as a salon owner, especially because I didn't have the funds and managerial experience to go it alone from day one. I have learnt a great deal about running a business from being in this partnership.”
