Hairspray hometown production

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Saks was established over 40 years ago, growing from one salon in Darlington in the North East of England to the UK’s leading hair and beauty salon franchise group, now operating across THREE continents… with more expansion planned for the future.

Despite our international success we love our roots (pun intended) and were thrilled when we were approached by Darlington Operatic Society for Saks International to sponsor its adaptation of the Broadway show, Hairspray at the Civic Theatre in Darlington… the hit-show with big hair and even bigger personalities.

Hairspray is based in the US city of Baltimore. It’s 1962 and Tracy Turnblad – a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, is on a mission to follow her dreams and dance her way onto national TV. Tracy’s audition makes her a local star and soon she is using her new-found fame to fight for equality, bagging local heartthrob Link Larkin along the way.

The show has played to sell-out audiences all over the world with its smash hit songs including “Good Morning Baltimore”, “Welcome To The Sixties” and “You Can’t Stop The Beat”.

And we were delighted to give the wow factor to the show’s two leading ladies, Kat Flynn and Rhiannon Walker, who both get to play the lovely Tracy Turnblad. Saks Art Team members Luke Pluckrose and Katy Adamson treated ‘the Tracys’ to 60s backcombing with added Saks-style in our gorgeous Saks Darlington salon recently with help from salon owner Ruth Roddam.

Society chairman Julian Cound says: “It is fantastic to have the support of Saks for this production – a perfect match in all respects. The financial implications of putting on one of our productions at the Civic Theatre are immense. The budget for Hairspray is in the region of £105,000 so any financial support is welcome and we are so grateful to Saks for agreeing to sponsor us in this way.”

Dennis Cheesebrough, chairman and co-founder of Saks says: “We are delighted to be supporting Darlington OS in this way. It’s our chance to support the arts through an equally driven, professional local charity. We can’t wait to see the production in April!”
